Choosing your wedding entertainment can be hard, especially when it comes to budgets. Do you go for a DJ so you have music playing solidly all night or a live band to really help create the atmosphere?
Firstly you need to think about what sort of ambience you want for your wedding, do you want a swing band playing their version of your favourite hits, a rock and roll covers band or is your style more dance music played by a hip DJ?
You need to think about your guests too, and whether your Great Grandma is going to appreciate the rave music you loved in your youth. So whether it’s a DJ or a band make sure you have variety, a mix of young and old, fast and slow.
If your booking a band, check whether they include a DJ service, to provide music in their breaks. If not you may want to book a DJ as well, as you will only get so much live music and you don’t want your guests leaving the dance floor during every break.
If your budget is tight, it will generally be cheaper to hire a DJ as they are only one person, however there are cheaper options with bands too such as hiring a duo, or planning your wedding mid week to try and get those weekday discounts.
You also need to take in to account what space you have available, if your venue is small, it’s not worth getting yourself excited about a 6 piece swing band, that will end up taking up your entire dance floor.
If it’s a choice between the two we would suggest the band.
Having a great live band can really bring a party to life, it can especially help in encouraging your guests up on the dance floor.
Many good bands will have the proper equipment to DJ before, in between and after their sets to ensure your evening entertainment runs smoothly. This saves on money (having to book a band and a DJ) and stops any awkward silences between the band finishing and the DJ starting up.
If your band doesn’t have a DJ service and you can’t afford a DJ too you could even create your own playlist on your iPod; your band will most likely be happy for you to play this through their speakers.
In our experience having a live band really sets your wedding apart, and picking the right band will have your guests talking about your night for ages afterwards.
Whoever you decide to book, make sure you have heard recorded live performances and seen some video footage at the very least, get some recent testimonials and make sure they are willing to learn a few requests for you, don’t book a band only to find out they won’t learn your deeply loved first dance song!
